Look up

Have you experienced this phenomenon? When things are going well, everything goes really well? And when things are going badly, everything goes really badly?

This happens because we find what we look for. So if something crummy happens, we have a tendency to find more proof that life is crummy. And the converse is true as well.

I identified "Look up" as one of my personal commandments because it's an easy way to remind myself to look for the positive. When I've been bummed about something, I'll find something positive, however tiny, and say, "Things are looking up" and then I find more proof that things are going better.

There are other reasons I look up as well.

If I feel myself prioritizing my screen over people, I remind myself to look up, shut down the technology, and be present.

Often when I look up, I see blue sky, white clouds, pretty birds or beautiful trees - all reminders of how fortunate I am to live where I live.

The physical act of looking up reminds me of the vastness of the universe and the comparative smallness of me. It helps me keep things in perspective.

And looking up reminds me to ask God for help in times of trouble and to offer thanks when things are going well. I need to create more of those "How Great Thou Art" moments.

It what ways will you benefit from looking up? Give it a try and see the difference it makes in your life.
